to the impressive Viking Ships Museum. The
1000 year old Viking Ships make history come alive. Here you
will also discover an impressive collection of ornate sledges
and carriages, and a variety of tools and artifacts of the
Viking era. This afternoon we drive past the medieval fortress
of Akershus, the Royal
Palace and the busy port with the Town
Hall.
DAY
6
OSLO - HAMAR (1 NIGHT)
Leaving Oslo this morning we drive along the shores of Lake
Mjoesa, Norway's largest lake, to the town of Hamar, which
has a long tradition in arranging local music festivals. Hamar
co-hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and is actually
comprised of two towns. One is the busy and modern town of
commerce; the other is the medieval town, partly concealed
under the earth at Domkirkeodden. If you wish to discover
the town’s soul, you must search in the thrill between
the old and the new town. This two folded atmosphere of dreamy
calm and mild reflection makes Hamar a unique experience.
We continue to the Vikingskipet (The Viking
Ship), a modern multi functional hall with handsome architecture.
The shape of the hall plays on a theme handed down by the
Viking ships, whose functional and elegant form is just as
appealing today as it was one thousand years ago. Both large
and small arrangements, from exhibitions to anniversary dinners,
seminars and dance galas, take place here. This afternoon
we visit the ruins of its Cathedral with
the newly built Hamardomen, the largest glass
construction in Europe built to protect these old ruins. An
evening concert is planned at this unique construction.
·
Your Second Concert Performance will be today
DAY
7 HAMAR - OREBRO - MARIEFRED - STOCKHOLM (3 NIGHTS)
Leaving Hamar we drive across the border between Norway and
Sweden. We proceed along the shores of Lake Vaenern,
Sweden's largest lake and past Karlstad, the provincial capital
of the district of Vaermland. Karlstad is an important industrial
town as well as an administrative capital. The main industry
is woodworking. Karlstad is also the headquarters of the Swedish
Emigrant Register whose main purpose is to strengthen the
ties between Americans of Swedish descent and their relatives
in Sweden. It contains a wealth of information about the emigration
of Swedes to America and provides research facilities. We
continue through fertile Swedish countryside past the old
town of Oerebro, the capital of the Naerke
region. In the center of the town is the old 16th century
Oerbro Castle, located on an island in the
Svartaa River. The castle has played an important role on
many occasions as the meeting place of the Swedish Parliament.
We continue further along the shores of Lake Malaren and make
a short stop in the picturesque old town of Mariefred.
Mariefred owes its origin and its name to the Carthusian monastery
of Pax Mariae which was founded here in 1493 and continued
in existence until the Reformation. The town is dominated
by the 17th century Church on the Hill. Below this, in the
older part of the town, wooden houses line narrow lanes, most
of which runs down to the lake. To the north of the church
in the market square is the Town Hall, timber-built. We will
have time to stroll through these colorful narrow streets
of this quaint old town. We continue on to our hotel in Stockholm.
.
DAY
8 STOCKHOLM
We begin our touring this morning with a Guided City
Tour of Stockholm which will introduce you to the
sights of Sweden's capital, situated on fourteen islands.
Your tour includes an inside visit to the famous City
Hall, with its elegant Golden Hall,
site of the Nobel Prize Banquet. We will stroll through the
Old Town with its cobble-stone streets and
medieval buildings and the 13th-century Cathedral before walking
past the Royal Palace and the Stock
Exchange. Next we will rejoin the coach to go to the Southern
Island where we will have a splendid view over the city and
the harbor. This afternoon we visit Djurgarden where we will
visit the fascinating Vasa Ship Museum. This
elaborate warship was built in 1628 and sank in Stockholm
harbor on its maiden voyage. She was raised in 1961 with a
wealth of stores, guns, fittings, sculptures, now restored
and giving a remarkably complete view of naval life in the
early 17th century. The rest of the day is free in Stockholm.
DAY 9 STOCKHOLM
The morning is free to explore this beautiful city on your
own. You might want to browse through some of the excellent
shops. The NK Department Store is Stockholm's
finest department store. It has a superb collection of international
and Swedish products, chosen for the highly selective. Tonight
we will enjoy a Farewell Dinner on our last
night in Stockholm.
· Your Third
Concert Performance will be today.
DAY 10
