Norway
- Winter Sports
& Husky Sled Trip
This
tour visits The Røros area of Norway, in the mountains
near the border with Sweden. Røros is a UNESCO world
heritage site, an old copper mining town, founded
in the 17th century, and a large part of the town
is like a living museum. The area can by reached either
by flight to Oslo, followed by either internal flight
direct to Røros, or train or bus onwards from Oslo
airport. Alternatively we can fly to Trondheim (with
Norwegian direct from Stansted), from here the transfer
time is 2-3 hours. The area has a very long snow season,
the longest in Norway. Snow lies on the ground from
mid-November to late April, making it an ideal destination
for an Easter tour. We stay at a mountain lodge on
the border with Sweden, half an hour's drive east
of Røros. Here we stay in four-bedded rooms each with
their own bathroom and little kitchenette. Cross country
skiing, snowshoe walking, alpine skiing and snowboarding
are all available less than 10 minutes drive from
the lodge. There is also a very good chance of meeting
reindeer at easter, and a half day of activities can
also be organised with the local Sami (lapp) people.
There is also the option of Snow Mobile driving and
our exciting tour concludes with an overnight Husky
dog sled trip.

Itinerary
Day 1 Fly to Trondheim
We fly from London Stansted Airport with the low cost
carrier Norwegian. On arrival we transfer by coach
from the airport to Vauldalen (2-3 hours). We stay
at the Vauldalen Mountain Lodge. This comfortable
lodge is situated in a fantastic location right out
in the mountains, close to the Swedish border. The
accommodation is simple but comfortable. There is
a hot-tub and sauna, and our meals will be based around
regionally sourced produce, fish and game. Cross country
ski tracks run directly from the lodge, and during
the Spring season of March and April the local Lapps'
reindeer herd will be in the mountains near the Lodge
Day
2 Cross Country Ski Day
Today we have a full day of cross country skiing,
starting from the doorstep of the lodge. After breakfast
we will be fitted out with our skiing equipment and
will have a two hour ski instruction session. After
lunch at the lodge, we will be able to go on a three
hour cross country ski tour with the chance to meet
local reindeer and their herders. In the evening we
return to the lodge for dinner.
Day
3 Half Day Snow Mobile Expedition
After breakfast we have a short transfer to the local
alpine resort. We will be provided with warm suits
and helmets and will embark on a three hour snow mobile
excursion, including lunch en route. The snow mobiles
can take two persons - a driver and a passenger -
and we can change roles during the course of the excursion.
(Please note you must be 16 to drive a snow mobile).
In the afternoon we return to the alpine village where
there will be time for downhill skiing or snow boarding.
Day
4 Commence Husky Trek
After breakfast we depart from Vauldalen and drive
40 minutes to the town of Røros. We spend an hour
here, visiting the historic centre, a historic mining
town with nearly all the original wooden houses preserved.
We then continue for a further 20 minutes to our husky
outfitter, where our two-day dog sledding trip begins.
Thermal clothing is provided and once dressed, we
meet the dogs and get instruction in sledge driving.
We pack the sleds, and get instructions and a debrief
on how to harness the dogs and to drive the sled.
You do not need to have any previous experience of
dog sledding - just lots of enthusiasm! We then have
lunch before setting out on our overnight husky trek.
Normally one person will drive the dog sled team with
four or six dogs whilst a second person rides in the
sled. Driver and passenger can change roles periodically
during the expedition. You will travel with your husky
team through a quiet and unspoiled landscape with
the chance to see reindeer, lynx, wolverines and Arctic
fox, whilst enjoying the stunning and unique surroundings.
During the night, if you are lucky, you also have
the chance to see the Northern Lights. We stay overnight
at a traditional log cabin and can enjoy a traditional
Lapp dinner of Reindeer meat. All our personal baggage
will be transported to the cabin by snow mobile.
Day
5 Conclude Husky Trek
We continue the husky trek until mid afternoon when
we rendez-vous with our transport and bid farewell
to our dogs. We depart for the 3 hour drive to Trondheim
where we stay at a local hotel or youth hostel.
Day
6 Fly home
After breakfast we make the 40 minute transfer to
Trondheim Airport for our flight back to London Stansted
Airport
