# 41 THE ANCIENT CITY OF EVORA, ALENTEJO

Evora is the capital of Alto Alentejo, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was a Roman city under Julius Caesar (Liberalitas Julia). Evora is something of an architectural phenomenon as its builders freely adapted whatever styles they desired, from Mudejar to Manueline to Roman to Rococo, and is considered to be a living museum. Highlights include the remains of a Roman Temple and the Se, Evora's Cathedral.

Sintra, located just outside of Lisbon, is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was a favorite summer retreat for the Kings of Portugal. Its stunning setting on the slopes of the granite Serra, as well as its magnificent palaces, draws thousands of visitors each year.
