| # 92 THE
ANCIENT & MYSTERIOUS CITY OF TEOTIHUACAN, MEXICO CITY |
 |
When
based in Mexico City, be sure to take an excursion to Teotihuacán,
one of most impressive cities of the ancient world which was founded
before the Christian era. The founders of the city remain a mystery,
however, many civilizations held it sacred including the Aztecs who
believed it was built by giants. A tour
of the remains includes: the Avenue of the Dead,
Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Sun,
and the Pyramid of the Moon. |
|
# 93 THE COLONIAL &
SILVER CITY OF TAXCO, GUERRERO
|
| Taxco
was an important city in the Colonial era and today is a city
known for its silver jewelry and some of Mexico's finest masks. Dominating
the city skyline is Santa Prisca y San Sebastian Church, one
of Mexico's most impressive baroque churches with its spectacular
façade and paintings by Miguel Cabrera. Vistors will certainly want
to wander in the Mercado Central which features a collection
of wholesale silver shops. |
|
|
# 94 THE AMAZING CITY
OF OAXACA, OAXACA
|
 |
Oaxaca
is set in a fertile valley up in the mountains of the Sierra Madre
del Sur and is one of best-preserved and most charming of Mexico's
colonial cities. In addition to excursions to nearby Monte Alban
and the Tlacolula Valley, the city itself features spectacular
churches and Museums
including the Museo de Regional de Oaxaca, and the Rufino
Tamayo Museo de Arte Prehispánico de México. |
|
# 95 THE REMAINS AT CHICHEN
ITZA, YUCATAN
|
| The
ruins at
Chichén
Itzá
is one of the world's most impressive ancient sights which has two
parts: the northern zone, which shows distinct Toltec influence; and
the southern zone, with mostly Puuc architecture. Located in the heart
of the Yucatan Peninsula, the
sight is highlighted by the El Castillo Pyramid,
the Main Ball Court, the Temple of Jaguars,
the Temple of the Skulls, the Temple of the Warriors,
and the impressive Observatory. |
 |
|
# 96 THE PYRAMIDS OF
PALENQUE, CHIAPAS
|
 |
Just
outside of Villahermosa, the capital city of the State of Tabasco,
you will find the Parque
Nacional Palenque. Pottery shards found during the excavations
show that people lived in this area as early as 300 BC and, by the
Classic period, Palenque was an important ceremonial center.
Of all Mexico's ruins, this is the most haunting because of its majesty,
its history, and its mysterious setting. |
