# 53 DISCOVER THE HISTORY & BEAUTY OF THE GREEK ISLANDS
The Greek Islands are a traveler's idea of paradise- unrivaled scenic beauty and remains from history's most important civilizations. Whether island-hopping by plane, ferry or hydrofoil, or relaxing on a Greek Island Cruise, be sure to include a visit to the Greek Islands on your custom-designed itinerary. We highly recommend visits to the breathtaking island of Santorini, historic Crete, and beautiful Mykonos.
# 54 THE PERCHED MONASTERIES OF METEORA, THESSALY
The natural sandstone towers of Meteora, which means "suspended rocks," is one of the most stunning places in the world. Perched high atop the mountains in Thessaly, be sure to visit the monasteries of Megalo Meteoro, the first and highest monastery founded in the region; Varlaam, including its magnificent church, Katholikon, which features beautiful frescoes; and Rousanou, the most spectacularly located of all the monasteries.
# 55 THE ANCIENT RUINS OF DELPHI, STEREA ELLADA
Ancient Delphi was one of the most sacred spots to the Greeks. Its setting is dramatic, a natural amphitheater that faces the sea and lies under the shadow of Mt. Parnassus. The Sacred Way winds up the hill to the Sanctuary of Apollo, for many centuries antiquity's largest center of pilgrimage. The sight also includes the spectacular ruins of the Doric Temple of Apollo, home of the Pythia, the oracle who would deliver the prophecies of the gods.
# 56 THE THEATER AT EPIDAURUS, PELOPONNESE
Epidaurus was an extensive therapeutic and religious center dedicated to the healing god Asklepios. The Theater of Epidaurus is the most famous and best-preserved of all the ancient theaters in Greece. Designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the late 4th-century BC, the theater could accommodate up to 14,000 spectators and the acoustics are still a marvel of engineering.
# 57 THE ACROPOLIS HIGH ABOVE ATHENS
No trip to Athens is complete without a visit to the Acropolis which has dominated the skyline for over 2,000 years. A citadel was built on the rock in Mycenaean times and was the first of a series of temples that honored Athena, the city's divine patroness. In 480 BC, the Persians captured the Acropolis and the Athenian leader Pericles later rebuilt the site according to his plan of unsurpassed beauty and grandeur.
# 58 TREASURES OF THE NATIOANL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, ATHENS
The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is one of the world's most important museums and houses treasures collected from many small museums in and around Athens. The treasures are displayed in chronological order including Neolithic & Cycladic art, Mycenaen Art, Classical Sculpture, Roman & Hellenistic Sculpture, the Thira Frescoes, and a Pottery Collection.
